Be a Digital Citizen ALL Year Long - Download or Create a Digital Citizenship Pledge for your class to sign.

• Citizen Pledge Lesson Plan from Common Sense (3rd-5th)
• Digital Citizenship Pledge Poster from Common Sense 

Get Students Thinking and Talking - Have a Flipgrid Discussion

• What can students do to keep themselves safe in their social media environments?
• How can students cite sources and use content for multimedia projects safely and ethically? 
• How can we use technology to communicate and collaborate with others in order to help solve problems for local and global communities?

Promote Appropriate Communication Skills and Respect for Other Perspectives - Have students work collaboratively on a Google Slide or Doc. Skype or Hangout with another class to learn more about their culture and learning experiences.

Have some Online FUN while learning - Check out the following interactive games for students

Teacher Others - Design a poster, info-graphic, or video teaching others about the importance of being a good digital citizen.

Digital Citizenship Week - October 15-19

Digital Citizenship is a user's appropriate and responsible behavior with regard to technology use.

From the moment a student is handed a device, he or she should apply their “digital” citizenship skills. K-12 students should be taught how to work respectfully with others online, be safe while online, solve problems, communicate clearly and appropriately, distinguish facts from opinions; truths from falsehoods, and how being a good online citizen can empower them.

Here are a few resources, ideas, and activities to help you develop and support good online citizens.

• 9 Elements of Digital Citizenship
• Common Sense Media - This website has an entire curriculum for K-12 grades. It also has wonderful videos, posters, and activities to help support digital citizenship all year long. 
• Google Teacher Center: Digital Citizenship and Safety Course - This course for teachers took me less than 2 hours to complete. Teachers will walk away with ideas, videos, and activities that you can use immediately with your students. Upon completion of the course, you also receive a certificate.
• Be Internet Legends - Free online program from Google to help children be responsible, safe, and appropriate users of technology. 
• Be Internet Awesome Resources
• Be Internet Awesome Presentations - Google Slide presentations that can be used in class.
• Be Internet Awesome Interland Online Game

Half-Way Point

We are at the half-way mark of Digital Citizenship Week. I encourage to you visit and make use of the resources and suggested activities found on our website. I also encourage you to set a goal to include digital citizenship activities, videos, discussions, etc. throughout the year, not just for this week.

Most teachers would probably agree that while most students have and use mobile devices and computers; students don't always know how to use devices properly in an educational setting. More and more classes are branching out by connecting and collaborating with other classes from around the world. For many of our students, these are new situations; in which, they will need guidance and modeling on how to work appropriately in that type of setting. We can help make students aware of the difference between personal and professional technology use, and how to safely and responsibly use technology devices in any setting.

Special Edition: PD in your Pajamas

Join us Thursday, October 12 at 7 p.m. for a special edition of PD in your Pajamas webinar. During the webinar, we will discuss what it means to be a good digital citizen, preview the various resources and games that are available to teachers and students, and share activities that you can do with your classes during Digital Citizenship Week. 

PSA Challenge 2017

Want to inform others about the positive effects of being a good digital citizen? 

Have your students Create (up to) a 90 second video in which students communicate their understanding of one or more of the Nine Elements of Digital Citizenship and the positive effects that result from being a model digital citizen.

Guidelines for PSA

• PSA must address authentic issues relevant to digital citizenship - 9 Elements of Digital Citizenship
• PSA must be appropriate for a mixed audience (from grade level to school board)
• PSA must follow appropriate copyright guidelines
• PSA must stay within the 90-second limit (including credits)
• Winning entries will be selected showcased on SAISD Channel 4 throughout the school year.

Mobile App Monday

With Digital Citizenship Week around the corner, here are a few resources to help your students be more responsible and conscientious of the digital footprint they leave behind. The apps provide students a chance to make decisions and see the outcomes in a safe environment.  The following resources  from commonsensemedia.org will give students a chance to learn and practice 

the Nine Elements which all users should be familiar with when it comes to being a member of  and participating in a digital society. . 

Digital Passport is an online app ($2.99) for Grades 3-5. It includes 5 games that teach students how to be safe and respectful in a digital community while on their mobile device or computer. It also offers offline activities for the teachers to use in the classroom and aligns with the digital citizenship curriculum from commonsensemedia.org.

Digital Compass is a free online app for Grades 6-9. It is a choose-your-own adventure game available in English and Spanish. Students choose from one of the 8 available characters and navigate through the ins and outs and ups and downs of daily digital life. This program aligns with the digital citizenship curriculum from commonsensemedia.org. 

Digital Bytes is an online experience for teens (13+). Teens can work individually, with a partner, or in a small group to complete a project that deals with today's digital issues. The program is designed to give students a voice and help impact and change for the better their digital community. Students will need to create a free account at commonsensemedia.org.

Digital Citizenship Week - PSA Challenge 2016

The Instructional Technology Department is gearing up for a great Digital Citizenship Week - October 17 - 21, 2016. Be sure to check back with us later in September when we post our October Newsletter online. In that issue we'll have information about our 1st Annual Digital Citizenship PSA Challenge, activities for you and your students throughout the week and links to some great resources and apps. It's so important that we teach our students to be responsible users of technology so you don't want to miss out!
